Mexico’s unprecedented judicial reforms

Franc Contreras

03:02

Mexican voters will go to the polls on June 1st, and for the first time in history they will elect judges of all levels, including the Supreme Court. More than 2,600 candidates are competing for 881 federal judicial positions. Another election is scheduled for 2027 where citizens will vote to elect candidates for 800 more judicial jobs. The June election will remove standing judges and magistrates who currently hold seats in the nation’s courts, resulting in a complete makeover of Mexico’s judicial system.
